Character HISTORY: wiki

Character PERSONALITY: Haruto Souma is, at his core, focused deeply and intensely on one thing: defeating Wiseman and the Phantom menace, and protecting anyone else from becoming a Phantom. His experience with defeating his own despair and continued brushes with Gates has left him sure that he must protect their hope, no matter the personal cost. When rescuing his 'assistant' Shunpei, who longed to be like Haruto and use magic to help people, he supported Shunpei's dream by taking the onus of it on himself. In saving his police partner Rinko, he levied up her hope of becoming a great detective by offering to help her. Since then he's helped countless people with his promise of protection, and the follow-through on it. "I'll be all the hope you need," he says to each and every one, and he means it.

The burden of being a Wizard--of being the last hope of so many--weighs heavily on him. "I never asked to be a wizard," he reveals in the first episode; "but," he goes on to say, "have no regrets, and let's keep moving forward." Haruto believes intensely in remembering and cherishing the past, but not living by it. "You are our hope," his parent's last words before their deaths, spur him to never lose his own hope. Haruto is a professional, firmly committed to his duty and to his own principles, and it deeply effects his work ethic. Once he's in work mode, he's willing to go as far as it takes to protect the Gates and defeat the Phantoms. He's all internal fire when fighting his opponents, and when dealing with police detective Kizaki obstructing his protection of a young man named Naoki out of a misguided attempt to protect Naoki from Haruto, Haruto is downright short, rolling his eyes and snapping. Anyone in on the Gates-Phantoms-Wizard scene needs to be helping Haruto or getting out of his way.

Despite that, Haruto wears an extremely cool exterior, never seeming to get terribly worked up about anything. This may partially be because he's afraid of losing control of Dragon and therefore his own existence, but it seems largely because he needs to continue being strong for his friends and for any gates he meets. A visibly upset Wizard swearing to protect you can't be much use, can he? Haruto is kind of a snot, who likes to tease and poke at his friends. He knows he's handsome and not really the type to downplay it; he's self-possessed and self-aware, and that's as much one of his weapons as his magical rings. When transforming into Wizard and doing battle with Phantoms, Haruto is generally composed, thinking critically and fast on his feet. He's a capable fighter more than willing to use tricks and cheats, and an irritated Phantom is a Phantom in further danger of being smacked down. He's sassy with both the employees of his favorite doughnuts shop (in a friendly way) and his nemesis, Phoenix, (not so much) refusing to show fear, back down, or try a doughnut flavor he's not that into. Plain sugar or bust, for Haruto Souma.

"It's showtime," he declares, when transforming, and that's indicative of his approach to both battles, and to life. Why bother doing anything if you couldn't be a little showy doing it? It's easier to take burdens when you look unburdened yourself, after all.

Canon update additions:

Haruto is canonically depressed as of his previous canon point, being around Exsilium hasn't helped, and his recent mission was the final blow. His new canon point--just past two-thirds through his canon--puts him just after the trauma of losing his magic and nearly losing his assistant, Koyomi, as a result. Despite that setback, his magic's returned to him, stronger than before, and in the process he's subjugated Dragon more thoroughly by reaffirming their existence as mutually beneficial, at least for the moment. Haruto's still not really 'well', in any sense, but he's developed coping measures, been reaffirmed by Koyomi and other characters of his worth beyond his magic, and is more skilled in handling situations that are less cut and dry than his existing experience. He'll be retaining his memories, which--combined with his canonical experiences--will be enough to help him cope effectively and adjust to life in the big city, so to speak.

Haruto is coming back harder, (he made the decision to kick a constantly resurrecting enemy into the sun for an eternity of suffering as a result of injuring his closest friend over the course of the update, for example) with stronger resolve to protect innocent people from Phantoms. His mission has been reaffirmed over and over in the gap between his canon points, reminding him over and over why he fights. Haruto's in it to win it, now, even if that doesn't mean clear-cut 'defeat x bad guy, save civilians' any more. Episodes 34 and 35 dealt with Haruto meeting Sora, the Gremlin Phantom, who is revealed to have been a serial killer before the Sabbath, and who subjugated Gremlin in order to keep control of his body and Gremlin's powers. He is what Haruto could be, and he's absolutely muddied Haruto's moral waters. He's also been in more constant contact with current game cast canonmate Kousuke Nitoh, setting him just ahead of Nitoh timeline-wise, which will not only cement an updated relationship full of antics and shenanigans, it will make them an actual team. Well, as much of a team as they get, anyway. Other characters in game will find him more relaxed in general, less concerned with the doings and mutterings of Dragon in his ear. He's always been dependable, but now he'll be able to roll with the punches better. All in all, he'll just be a little better.

» EXSILIUM INFORMATION
Chosen WEAPON: Haruto certainly has a physical weapon, but he's not going to choose to enchant that, as its effectiveness is limited only by his own power. In fact, all of his powers are only limited by his own internal well of magical energy (the translation I'm working off of uses 'mana', which I think is a good substitute). As such, he's chosen to enchant his mana! While it is suggested in canon that his mana will continue to strengthen as he does, it is also clearly spelled out that he can and does run out of mana, exhausting himself until he can recharge. He is constantly downing doughnuts, which is probably mostly because he just likes doughnuts, but they also appear to be a source of expendable energy. The enchantment will allow him to cast more and stronger spells, with less need of a nap or a meal.
Character INVENTORY: Haruto is wearing this outfit, so that's what he's got clothes-wise. He is also in possession of the Wizard Driver, his Wizard Rings (including the rings for his three PlaMonsters and the Flame Dragon and Hurricane Dragon Rings), and the WizarSwordGun.
